CLEAVING BY NATURE
And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. (Ruth 1:16,17)
The nature of God’s love is to cleave, thus those called to Christian marriage must take on this nature. These words spoken by Ruth so beautifully represent the nature of cleaving. We don’t leave our family when it becomes convenient or more comfortable. Though Ruth did not know what hardships might await her, she was steadfast in her determination to stick with her mother in law and with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. She models the love of God as she is “a friend who sticketh closer than a brother" (see Proverbs 18:24). In fact, it was said of Ruth that she, a daughter in law, was “better… than seven sons” (see Ruth 4:15).
Today, let us be committed to know the love of God, and let us be like Ruth--cleaving by nature.
