ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA
IN THE BEGINNING...THE WORD
DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR TODAY, JUNE 23, 2013
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. Acts 5:1-11
After reading the facts of the Ananias and Sapphira case, one may wonder: "But why did they have to die?"
We take Church so lightly; many believers think that it is more like a country club. But the story of Ananias and Sapphira reminds us that Church is not at all like a country club. It is not just a nice place to take your family. It is a place where we must be broken-- to enter in. We must be humble... or humbled. Indeed, as we take part in the life of the Church, we must discern properly the "Lord's body," realizing that he was broken for us so that we might be whole, unified, and without division. If we do not discern properly this unity of body and spirit we will bring damnation to ourselves as described in I Corinthians 11: "Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord: But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep." T
What lesson do we learn about the Lord's body in the story of Ananias and Sapphira. First, we must see that the early church consisted of believers who were willing to give their all, not holding back for their own selfish desires. They were real and really knit together. Ananias and Sapphira thought they could be a part of the Church without sacrificing for the life of the church. They did not regard the oneness of the Lord's body but instead went forward with their own agenda, lying to the Holy Ghost. Actually, anytime we have our own, separate, agenda in the body we are not discerning the body correctly and we lie in danger. The Holy Spirit is drawing us to unity, to oneness, to agreement, to Christ like LOVE. Christ gave his life for the Shalom, the peace, the unity, the oneness, of the body-- one with God and one another.
Apostle Paul teaches in I Corinthians, Chapter 11(please read) that there are to be no divisions among the believers, and there is no place for the contentious man in all of the churches of God.
Today, let us have sincere communion.
